Julie Denton -
KY State Senator -
36th District
|
Senator Julie Rose Denton is a Republican from the
36th district in Jefferson County. She is a graduate of
the University of Louisville and a dental hygienist.
Julie is married to Barry Denton, who is a police officer
in Jefferson County. She is the mother of three children.
Senator Denton was first elected to the state senate in
1994 and chairs the Senate Health and Welfare committee.
She also serves on the Banking and Insurance committee,
as well as Tourism, Labor and Industry. Currently, she is
co-chair of Kentucky's Brain Injury Task Force.
At the national level, Senator Denton serves on the
Health and Human Services Task Force of the American
Conference of State Legislators (ALEC). ALEC is an
organization composed of state legislators from each
state. In 1998 she was chosen "Legislator of the Year" by
ALEC for her work in the area of health care and
affordable health insurance.
Senator Denton is a member of Leadership Kentucky. In
1999 she participated in a political exchange program in
Japan with the American Council of Young Political
Leaders (ACYPL). In 2000 she hosted political dignitaries
from the Philippines, here in Louisville, through ACYPL.
ACYPL is a nonpartisan organization that facilitates
exchanges with other countries in order to facilitate
better relations and understanding between foreign
countries and the U.S.
Since being elected, Senator Denton has received numerous
awards for her work and dedication to the people of her
district and Kentucky. She has received the Carl Perkins
Award in recognition of her efforts for those with mental
retardation and developmental disabilities. The National
Federation of Independent Business presented her with the
Guardian of Small Business Award for successfully passing
legislation that gave 100% tax deductibility to
individuals for the purchase of health insurance. She
received the Golden Strawberry Award from Kentucky
Harvest for her bill that set aside one day each year as
Kentucky Harvest Day in an effort to highlight the needs
of the hungry. AARP recognized Senator Denton for her
assistance and help with issues important to senior
citizens. For her support of safe and affordable nursing
homes, Senator Denton received an award from the Kentucky
Nursing Home Association. The Kentucky Dental Hygienists
Association recently awarded her the Friend of the
Profession Award for successfully helping them and the
dentists pass a bill they had been negotiating for years.
Senator Denton has also received special recognition from
the Kentucky Occupational Therapists Association for her
bill that brought their scope of practice in line with
the rest of the county.
